Labor Department Fines Bakery for Discrimination

National company denies allegations but pays fines.

The Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) investigated the activities of a large baking company in Nebraska and found that the company had violated federal law between January 2018 and June 2019. The investigation determined that the bakery, which produces national leading brands, had discriminated against over 100 female applicants who applied for employment during that time. The OFCCP fined the company $131,216 in back pay and interest owed to those applicants.

“Federal contractors who fail to give equal consideration to all applicants – regardless of gender – violate the law,” said OFCCP Regional Director Carmen Navarro. “By entering into a federal contract, an employer agrees to ensure equal opportunity for all workers and compliance with all federal employment laws. The U.S. Department of Labor will act when they fail to do so.”
