In the News…
The U.S. Senate unanimously passed Senator Alex Padilla’s Wildfire Emissions Prevention Act (WEPA) of 2026 this week. The legislation seeks to amend the Clean Air Act to permit states and communities to conduct prescribed burns to reduce the risk of uncontrollable wildfires. Such jurisdictions were previously restricted from such mitigation efforts due to particulate regulations regarding air quality.
Senator Padilla said, We cannot afford to wait until the next fire starts to take action. We must ensure that communities across the state and country have the necessary resources to proactively prevent and mitigate these disasters.”
The California senator explained, “Prescribed fire is one of the most effective tools we have to confront the growing impacts of the wildfire crisis. I am proud to see the Senate unanimously pass our bipartisan bill to help communities protect their land as they face growing threats of wildfires.”
The legislation must be reconciled with the House version, which passed earlier this year.
