Christopher Thomas Landau was born in November 1963 in Madrid, Spain, during his father’s diplomatic service. He earned an undergraduate degree from Harvard University. He received a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. He clerked for then-Judge Clarence Thomas of the D.C. Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, and later for Justice Thomas on the Supreme Court. Landau also clerked for Justice Antonin Scalia.

Landau became an associate with a corporate law firm and became a partner two years later. He chaired the appellate practice of the firm until he joined another global firm based in Los Angeles. He served an as adjunct professor of administrative law at Georgetown University and later served on the advisory committee on the Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure.

President Trump appointed Landau as U.S. Ambassador to Mexico in March 2019. He was confirmed and sworn into office in August 2019. President Trump nominated Landau to be Deputy Secretary of State in December 2024. The Senate confirmed him, and he assumed office in March 2025.

Landau is married to Caroline, and they have two children.

Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau issued a joint statement with Argentine Minister of Foreign Affairs Pablo Quirno on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly High Level Week, launching the Andes-Atlantic Corridor, a joint initiative to strengthen and modernize infrastructure linking Argentina’s vital economic sectors to major Atlantic ports and Western markets.

The joint statement highlighted, “With this new economic corridor, the United States and Argentina are advancing our shared commitment to the safety, security, and prosperity of the Western Hemisphere and its critical supply chains.”

The statement explained, “The Andes-Atlantic Corridor aims to facilitate public and private investment in transportation, energy, and digital infrastructure for a generation, making the United States a fundamental partner for infrastructure and investment in Argentina. Mineral, oil, and gas exports will increase via U.S. and U.S.-backed investments in rail, waterways, ports, pipelines, and energy generation and transmission infrastructure, built on a foundation of trusted technology that aims to ensure optimal efficiency and maximum cybersecurity.”

The diplomats concluded, “The Andes-Atlantic Corridor is part of the G7 Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment and builds on the United States’ support for strategic economic corridors globally that secure U.S. supply chains and create opportunities for U.S. firms.“
