U.S. Senator from Mississippi
Cindy Hyde-Smith was born in May 1959 in Brookhaven, Mississippi. She earned an associate’s degree from Copiah-Lincoln Community College and an undergraduate degree from the University of Southern Mississippi.
Hyde-Smith became a lobbyist for highway safety and nationwide healthcare coverage. She then served in the Mississippi State Senate for twelve years before she was elected commissioner of Mississippi’s agriculture and commerce.
Mississippi Governor Bryant appointed Hyde-Smith to the U.S. Senate when the previous senator resigned. She was sworn into office in April 2018, won the special election to retain the seat that fall, and was reelected in 2020.
Hyde-Smith is married to Michael, and they have one daughter. She is Baptist.

U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi, chair of the Senate Pro-Life Caucus, was joined by pro-life colleagues in calling for President Trump’s administration to reissue a rule that requires separate billing for abortion services under Section 1303 of the Affordable Care Act. The request followed a report earlier this month from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) that showed taxpayer subsidies have covered approximately 4.4 million elective abortions in 2026 under more than a thousand ACA Qualified Health Plans (QHPs).
Senator Hyde-Smith stated, “The GAO’s findings provide further evidence that Obamacare plans, as they have from the beginning, continue to violate the Hyde Amendment ban on the use of federal tax dollars to pay for abortion services.”
The senator continued, “Pro-life taxpayers should know whether their hard-earned money is being funneled to abortion providers, and the White House should reinstate protections that help ensure that those of us who oppose abortion do not subsidize health exchange plans that provide abortion coverage.”
Nearly a third of all Obamacare qualified health plans reportedly violate the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits taxpayer funding for abortion procedures.
