Twenty-five years ago this week, engineers in five states worked 72 hours straight.
The page itself was simple: one screen where a person could leave an email address and begin receiving a weekly prayer letter. The hard work was underneath it. Servers had to be stood up in ten different parts of the country, and a data system built that could receive a flood of visits and sign-ups without collapsing.
Word of the gathering spread quickly. What began in news from the White House Rose Garden soon reached outlets across the country. On Monday, September 18, 2001—the first Monday after September 11—The Presidential Prayer Team was born. Sign-ups poured in by the tens of thousands an hour.
Then came the next miracle of ordinary work. Email itself was still new. How do you send several hundred thousand letters every week to a family that would not stop growing? Story after story followed as this ministry pioneered ways to reach those who had said yes to pray.
