In times of illness, doctors will usually order a variety of blood tests. Those with appropriate training look through microscopes or develop cultures to investigate the numerous tiny cells and determine a diagnosis. The prophet Jeremiah is calling for a similar type of spiritual evaluation in this week’s verse—close scrutiny. As the worst diseases often begin with the smallest of microbes, what may seem to be the smallest of sins might infect the entire body of believers. The remedy for a sick culture is for individuals to return to the Lord. This begins with humble repentance (2 Chronicles 7:14), one person at a time. God has promised to hear, forgive, and heal! Pray for the hearts of Americans to be open to the touch of the Holy Spirit, and that they respond by embracing Christ and the nation may become whole.
