Justice Samuel Alito Warns of Intolerance

Religious liberty and free speech are endangered, he said.

Some of the freedoms that America takes for granted are in danger of being lost, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito warned in a speech this week.

“Tolerance for opposing views is now in short supply,” he said. He referenced the current state of discourse in the nation’s law schools and the “broader academic community.” Many recent law school graduates claim they face “harassment” and “retaliation” for any views that depart “from law school orthodoxy,” he said.

“In certain quarters, religious liberty has fast become a disfavored right,” the justice said. “For many today, religious liberty is not a cherished freedom. It’s often just an excuse for bigotry and it can’t be tolerated even when there’s no evidence that anybody has been harmed.” He cited the case of the Little Sisters of the Poor and said, “The question we face is whether our society will be inclusive enough to tolerate people with unpopular religious beliefs.” He said Christians deserve the same protections as do any of the religious minority groups.

He said that houses of worship have been treated unfairly compared to other businesses during the pandemic.

“Religious liberty is in danger of becoming a second-class right,” he said, adding concerns about free speech and the Second Amendment as well. He closed his comments by saying that standing up for the Constitution and freedom is work that lies ahead for all Americans.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Justice Alito and other members of the Supreme Court to be diligent in protecting America’s liberties.
  • That Christians would make their voices heard on matters of religious liberty and freedom of speech.
  • For the Department of Education to protect students’ rights in the halls of academia.
