Increases the Ceuta advisory level to 3 as Moroccan migrants destabilize the region.
The U.S. Department of State issued a travel advisory for the Kingdom of Spain over the weekend, setting that nation at Level 2, “Exercise increased caution.” The department increased the area of Ceuta, where tens of thousands of Moroccan migrants recently poured over the border, to a Level 3, “Reconsider travel.”
The State Department advised U.S. citizens in Spain to avoid demonstrations and crowds, be aware of their surroundings, follow the instructions of local authorities, and check local media for breaking events. Officials urged travelers to be prepared to adjust their plans.
The department also encouraged enrollment in the SMART Traveler Enrollment Program so that Americans receive messages and alerts from the U.S. Embassy and make it easier to locate them in an emergency.
