Assistant Secretary Oz hopes that AI will provide a “single, solvable mathematical equation” to transportation issues.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) is launching an initiative to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) in the optimization of the U.S. transportation system as part of the Genesis Mission National Science and Technology Challenges. The department highlighted the usefulness of leveraging AI involvement in transportation infrastructure and management, such as increasing housing availability, shortening on-site construction and maintenance, and reducing gridlock and operational costs.
“For the first time in history, we possess the computational power to treat our transportation network as a single, solvable mathematical equation,” said Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology Seval Oz. “We are using advanced AI to lower costs and transform the lifecycle of physical transportation infrastructure.”
The National Bureau of Economic Research reports a 2.3 percent improvement in manufacturing and service sectors when transportation efficiency is increased.
