The Justice Department is considering criminal charges for those who illegally cast ballots.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) is conducting an investigation after New Jersey acknowledged the inclusion of approximately 6,600 noncitizens on its voter rolls. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon of the Civil Rights Division sent a letter to Governor Mikie Sherrill requesting the identities of the individuals as part of the investigation into whether the state violated federal election laws.
Governor Sherrill reported she just recently learned of the improper registration due to a software error at the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission under the previous governor’s administration.
“It is illegal for any noncitizen to vote in a federal election, and every unlawful vote dilutes the voice of American citizens,” DOJ spokesperson Kiersten Pels stated. “The Civil Rights Division is investigating and will keep pressing states to clean their rolls. The Department is prosecuting cases where the law and evidence support it.”
