A similar resolution previously passed the Senate, but Congress lacks two-thirds majority to overrule presidential veto.
The House of Representatives passed a measure, under the 1973 War Powers Act, that would require President Trump to remove U.S. military forces from the Iran conflict unless Congress approves the continuation of the operation. The Senate narrowly passed a similar measure last month, and may consider a vote on the House version.
However, support in each chamber is unlikely to reach the two-thirds approval that would be needed to override President Trump’s veto.
The president and members of his administration have declared the war with Iran over. While indirect negotiations on a ceasefire have continued, Iran has periodically launched attacks on neighboring countries that house U.S. military personnel and equipment.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For wisdom for President Trump in his role as commander-in-chief of the U.S. Armed Forces.
- For the president and his advisors as they assess the status of the conflict with Iran.
- For Speaker Johnson and Majority Leader Thune as they preside over their chambers of Congress.
