Agencies combat Chinese company accused of hacking into American software.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced the court-authorized domain seizures of two Chinese-sponsored hacking platforms, QScan and QTRouter, that targeted U.S. critical infrastructure. Court documents from the Southern District of California describe the platforms’ creators as a People’s Republic of China (PRC)-sponsored group known as QTFY. The documentation stated that QTFY’s targets included the U.S. Senate, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Federal Reserve, the National Institutes of Health, and the Departments of Energy, Justice, and Health and Human Services.
“State-sponsored malicious hackers preying on America’s critical infrastructure will be stopped and prosecuted,” said Attorney General Todd Blanche. “Federal law enforcement investigated and disabled the PRC’s malicious software, the latest in a series of technical operations to dismantle indiscriminate hacking activities sponsored by the People’s Republic of China.”
The announcement follows years of investigation into QTFY’s effort to infect ‘internet-of-things’ (IoT) devices. The FBI and National Security Agency have records of QTFY’s activity dating back to 2018.
