The more than 100-year-old structure had not functioned since 2007.
President Trump’s administration continues to repair and restore monuments, fountains, and other structures in the nation’s capital and parks for the United States’ 250th anniversary. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy celebrated the completion of the restoration of the Columbus Fountain at Union Station this week.
“Today is a day of gratitude and a day of celebration,” Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the fountain. Referring to one of the first views railway passengers see as they arrive, he added, “We have changed the front door of America.”
Secretary Duffy added, “You will be met with a fountain that is beautiful and a fountain that actually works.” The fountain had not been running since 2007.
In October 2025, Senator Ted Cruz of Texas and Representative Michael Rulli of Ohio requested that the Interior Department repair the neglected historic fountain.
The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on the National Mall is currently undergoing renovations, and the restoration of the Fountains at Meridian Park has been completed.
