HUD Releases Housing Construction Best Practices Report for States and Localities

The recommendations highlight regulatory processes, land availability, and construction timelines.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) released a report outlining recommended practices for state and local governments to reduce barriers to home construction and improve housing affordability. The report provides recommendations to lower construction costs, expand land availability for housing development, and shorten building timelines.

“HUD is encouraging our state and local partners to take inventory of their regulations and policies and make changes that will lower the cost to build and enable more efficient housing supply growth,“ said Secretary Scott Turner. “These Best Practices are an initial list of recommendations to facilitate growth while respecting communities’ unique needs. Adding efficiency to local building processes will result in more affordable homeownership opportunities for all Americans.”

The department noted that regulatory requirements can significantly affect housing costs and said the report is intended to help governments evaluate building rules, permitting systems, and related policies.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Turner to receive God’s guidance as he oversees HUD efforts to reduce the cost and timelines for home construction.
  • For U.S. housing officials as they develop policies that address affordability, development, and access to housing.
  • For state and local leaders, builders, planners, and communities addressing housing needs, regulatory questions, and infrastructure demands.
