He reported that the task force has halted $1.3 billion in Medicaid payments to California.
Vice President JD Vance announced that his anti-fraud task force has deferred $1.3 billion in Medicaid funding from potentially fraudulent home health care and hospice providers in California. He and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz spoke about the action from the White House on Wednesday. Medicaid Fraud Control Units are conducting investigations and will prosecute offenders.
“We’re announcing that the federal government is deferring $1.3 billion in Medicaid reimbursements from the state of California,” Vice President Vance said. “The simple reason is because the state of California has not taken fraud very seriously.” He added that states risk losing Medicaid funding from the federal government if they ignore fraud, and could face penalties.
Vice President Vance said, “How long are people going to pay into programs if they know that that money doesn’t go to a low-income kid who needs healthcare, but that money goes into a fraudster getting rich?”
“We’ve seen systemic and deeply troubling fraud in the hospice and home health space, with bad actors exploiting some of our most vulnerable Medicare patients and stealing money from the American taxpayer,“ Dr. Oz stated. “We’re shutting the door on fraud — preventing new bad actors from entering Medicare while we aggressively identify, investigate, and remove those already exploiting them.“
