Two Congressman Resign From House of Representatives

Eric Swalwell and Tony Gonzalez each allegedly engaged in sexual misconduct.

Representatives Eric Swalwell of California and Tony Gonzalez of Texas have separately announced their resignations from the House of Representatives. Congressman Swalwell had dropped his bid for governor of his state after multiple sexual misconduct allegations, and Congressman Gonzalez suspended his reelection campaign after the House Ethics Committee investigation based on a report from the Office of Congressional Conduct.

Congressman Gonzalez, who eventually acknowledged an affair with a staffer, stated on Monday, “There is a season for everything and God has a plan for us all. When Congress returns tomorrow, I will file my retirement from office.”

Congressman Swalwell, who has said the accusations against him are false, stated, “I am aware of efforts to bring an immediate expulsion vote against me and other members. Expelling anyone in Congress without due process, within days of an allegation being made, is wrong. But it’s also wrong for my constituents to have me distracted from my duties. Therefore, I plan to resign my seat in Congress.”

The two men were facing possible expulsion, as is Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick of Florida for financial misconduct. The House Ethics Committee is also conducting an investigation into Representative Cory Mills, also of Florida.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For House Speaker Mike Johnson to seek God’s guidance as he presides over the lower chamber of Congress.
  • For members of the House as they consider the expulsion of other representatives who have allegedly engaged in ethics violations.
