Energy Department Invests in Tribal Energy Infrastructure

The Office of Indian Energy seeks proposals for community-scale and large-scale project planning.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Indian Energy announced a $50 million funding opportunity to support Tribal-led energy planning and development. The notice invites applications from Tribal governments, organizations, and affiliated entities for community-scale energy projects, pre-development activities, and viability planning for larger initiatives. The funding is intended to support infrastructure planning and expand access to energy resources in Tribal communities.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Office of Indian Energy Director Eric Mahroum said the program will support project development and preparation for additional financing opportunities, including potential coordination with the Office of Energy Dominance Financing.

“By strengthening local energy infrastructure, we are supporting long-term economic growth, energy independence, and resilience across Indian Country,” said Secretary Wright.

“This funding will unleash Tribal energy development— supporting energy projects that aim to cut energy costs, expand electricity access, and advance economic opportunities. It’s exciting and like nothing we have offered before,” said Director Mahroum.

Officials explained the funding may support construction planning, project assessments, and technical development. Applications are due July 24, 2026, and a webinar on April 9 will provide additional information.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Wright as he oversees the Energy Department’s funding of tribal energy development.
  • For Director Mahroum as he administrates Office of Indian Energy awards to tribal infrastructure applicants.
  • For Tribal governments, organizations, and communities to efficiently and effectively use the funding for energy planning and development.
