VERSE OF THE WEEK
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your heart to God. – Colossians 3:16
Dwelling and Abiding
Is the Word of God a guest in your life, or does Scripture abide within you in such a way that you are as familiar with it as you are with your spouse or child? Today’s verse says to let Jesus’ words dwell in you – some translations say “abundantly“ or “plenteously.“ That is, His words should fill your heart, abiding with you comfortably, fully at home. The Lord’s words are powerful and consoling, challenging and assuring. Any need you have, at any moment, can be met within what He has said. However, you have to know His words. While you can turn to the Bible and search them out in times of distress, it is so much better to just have them there, at the tip of your tongue, because you have taken the time to memorize them. Perhaps you have not engaged in Scripture memorization. You can begin today, starting with Jesus’ words. Write them on a note card or Post-it note, then repeat them aloud as you do household work, take a walk, or even as you shop. Writing, speaking, and hearing Scripture seals it in your soul, and then it dwells in you.
