Secretary Kennedy links chronic disease rates to diet and proposes program reforms.
Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. outlined proposals to address what he describes as a national chronic disease crisis linked to dietary patterns. At a press conference with Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, Secretary Kennedy discussed efforts to revise meal offerings at selected military bases and emphasized broader reforms affecting food assistance and federal nutrition guidelines.
The health secretary referenced independent laboratory testing commissioned by private organizations that reported the presence of pesticide residues, heavy metals, and other contaminants in certain military meals and Meals Ready to Eat. He said his department is reviewing food quality in military facilities and exploring procurement and policy changes.
“We have the worst chronic disease burden of any country in the world, and it’s because of our food. It’s 70% of the food that we eat is ultra-processed food, and it’s not really food. It says it’s poison. It’s food-like substances.” Secretary Kennedy said his focus is shifting federal policy toward healthier and more affordable options. “We’re going to change that now, and we’re laser-focused on making it affordable.”
Secretary Kennedy stated that a significant portion of food consumed in the U.S. is highly processed and said the federal government will seek to expand access to whole foods through military dining facilities, school meal programs, and retail outlets participating in federal nutrition assistance programs.
