President Trump has warned of military action if Iran continues to pursue a nuclear weapons program.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the United States is prepared to pursue action against Iran if they refuse to negotiate with the U.S. on its nuclear weapons program. President Donald Trump has insisted that Iran not acquire nuclear weapon capabilities. His administration has been working with the leaders of Iran to try to persuade them to abandon their plans to obtain nuclear weapons. This included launching targeted military strikes on the country last summer, focused on facilities that were involved in Iran’s nuclear weapons development.
Secretary Hegseth stated that “Iran will not have nuclear weapons capability. And so they can either negotiate on that front or we have other options… [The president] doesn’t want to go that route, I don’t want to go that route, but our job is to be prepared, and so of course we are, we’re more than prepared.”
A meeting between U.S. and Iranian officials is expected to take place in Istanbul on Friday, February 6, to discuss a possible nuclear deal.
