The interagency agreement transitions to mercury-free vaccines and away from COVID-19-related partnerships.
Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Secretary of State Marco Rubio reported discussions with the Vaccine Alliance (Gavi) to advance vaccine and health reforms. With the commitments made by Gavi, the federal government is releasing appropriated funding from Congress to strengthen vaccine safety and improve public health.
State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said, “The Administration believes reducing reliance on mercury-containing vaccines, where suitable alternatives are available, is a pro-vaccine, pro-innovation policy.”
Gavi will be expanding access and transitioning to mercury-free vaccine alternatives for diseases such as polio, pneumococcal and meningococcal strains, and hepatitis B. The commitments include ending the promotion of COVID-19-related vaccines as well as removing funds for partnerships with the World Health Organization (WHO) relating to the disease.
