The measures will have to return to the House, resulting in a partial government shutdown.
Members of the Senate are considering separating funding for the Department of Homeland Security from the package the House of Representatives passed last week. Half of the annual funding bills have already been passed in both chambers and signed by President Trump.
As Friday is the expiration of the continuing resolution that ended the longest government shutdown in history last fall, some federal agencies will again run out of appropriations. The president had spoken with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer regarding concerns over funding for federal immigration enforcement and to negotiate an agreement to fund the remainder of federal agencies.
“We’re working on that right now,” said President Trump at the start of a Cabinet meeting at the White House on Thursday. “I think we’re getting close.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Majority Leader Thune to be prudent as he presides over the Senate.
- For wisdom for President Trump as he negotiates with the Senate minority to minimize the funding shortfall.
