Government Funding Legislation Passage in Question Over DHS/ICE Concerns

A partial government shut down could occur again if the House-passed minibus isn’t approved by the Senate.

The U.S. Senate is considering a minibus of six pieces of legislation that was passed last week by the House of Representatives. However, members of the minority party are questioning funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after an activist was fatally shot by Border Patrol officers over the weekend in Minnesota.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called for the rewriting of the DHS funding bill. His caucus proposed advancing five of the bills and negotiating funding for DHS separately. The first scheduled roll call vote of the upper chamber was postponed to Tuesday due to the winter storm system.

The legislation that the House passed includes Financial Services, National Security-State, Defense, Labor-HHS-Education, and Transportation-HUD measures, along with Homeland Security. The House is in recess this week, so if the Senate makes changes, the government will at least partly shut down as of January 30.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Senate leaders as they navigate the divide in priorities and concerns regarding immigration enforcement.
  • For wisdom for Majority Leader Thune and Minority Leader Schumer as they discuss and negotiate the next steps for funding the federal government.
