The increase in cargo theft has become a nationwide issue, costing businesses billions.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating the theft of $400,000 worth of live lobsters. The shipment was picked up in Massachusetts but never arrived at its scheduled destination, stolen en route to Costco locations in the Midwest.
The Department of Transportation flagged the event, as this is the latest in the increase of coordinated cargo thefts, costing businesses billions of dollars. According to federal officials, the groups targeting these shipments are likely organized and utilizing points of transfer to overtake the cargo.
Prior to this incident, the Transportation Department released a request for information (RFI) seeking input on how it can better protect supply chains from this threat of theft. The department stated in the request that these thefts cause “significant economic losses, disrupt supply chains, and in some cases fund broader illicit activities such as narcotics trafficking, counterfeiting, and human smuggling.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Secretary Duffy and U.S. transportation officials as they seek information to protect national supply chains.
- For Director Patel and agents of the FBI as they investigate this theft and seek to prevent others.
- For wisdom for the president and members of his administration as they strategize to address cargo theft.
