In the News…
Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama called for the U.S. Senate to end the filibuster in order to preserve the U.S. Constitution. Senator Tuberville said that, for Congress to deliver on President Trump’s “America First” agenda, the majority party must “get organized.” He pointed out that ending the Senate filibuster would “put real wins on the board for the American people.”
The senator said that former Senators Manchin and Sinema were the reason the opposition had not succeeded in removing the filibuster in the previous Congress and that, as soon as the majority changes parties in the future, they will immediately get rid of it.
Senator Tuberville said, “The filibuster was never supposed to be what it has become today. In the 1800s, it started as a Senate tradition used to allow extended debate. Debate would continue until a simple majority voted to end it. That changed in 1917 when the Cloture Rule was created, which required a two-thirds vote to end debate. In the 1970s, the threshold was lowered to 60 votes, where it remains today.”
He continued, “Over time, the filibuster has gone from a way to facilitate meaningful debate to a tool that greatly expands the power of a single Senator. So, it’s not really surprising that some of my colleagues are determined to keep it—it’s all about power.“ The senator cited the recent, record-breaking government shutdown as the result of the filibuster by the minority.
