U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in Kuala Lumpur ahead of the scheduled meeting this coming week between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Secretary Bessent was optimistic that the discussions would resolve trade tensions as the U.S. and China have each heightened tariffs on the other.
According to the treasury secretary, the two nations have engaged in “substantial communications” after Beijing announced export controls on rare earth magnets earlier this month.
