Government shutdown nears as Senate lacks support for continued funding resolution.
President Donald Trump met with congressional leaders to discuss averting a government shutdown. The talks with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer were reportedly unproductive, so the president’s administration has prepared to handle the halt of discretionary funding.
The White House Office of Management and Budget sent out a memo last week advising agencies to prepare for a reduction-in-force should Congress fail to authorize a continuing resolution to fund the government.
The House of Representatives passed a “clean“ continuing resolution, meaning that no partisan programs or funding were included. However, members of the Senate minority have insisted that health subsidies set to expire at the end of this year be included in any appropriations, even temporary ones.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune pointed out that the legislation is on the Senate desk awaiting approval, and President Trump is poised to sign it if the resolution is authorized.
Regarding the healthcare subsidies, Senator Roger Marshall explained, “These are COVID-era subsidies expiring as per Dem legislation (Inflation Reduction Act, ends 2025). No GOP bill caused this. COVID’s over, so are the temp boosts.“
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For party leaders in Congress as they deliberate what to include in funding legislation.
- For President Trump and members of his administration as they prepare for the possible government shutdown
