Agents visited 700 businesses in collaboration with local police over the course of three days.
The Secret Service concluded an investigation last week into credit card skimming, visiting 700 businesses in the Boston area to examine their credit card readers. The Secret Service, in partnership with local police forces, recovered 16 skimming devices installed in various point-of-sale terminals, gas pumps, and ATMs, an estimated loss prevention of $16.7 million.
Skimming devices are covertly installed in credit card readers to steal credit card information and eventually money. Government EBT cards are commonly affected by these schemes.
“The U.S. Secret Service – Boston Field Office, along with our federal, state and local law enforcement partners, are steadfast in our commitment to safeguarding the nation’s financial infrastructure and protecting our communities from fraudsters,” said Special Agent in Charge Randy Maloney, of the Boston Field Office. “This proactive operation, and those like it around the country, highlights the level of cooperation needed to combat the criminal enterprises that perpetrate these callous acts.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Director Curran to be discerning as he heads the U.S. Secret Service.
- For Attorney General Bondi and the attorneys of the Justice Department as they prosecute the perpetrators of fraud.
