President Trump expresses skepticism that an agreement will be reached.
The White House announced that President Donald Trump is planning on meeting with congressional leaders in an attempt to avert a partial government shutdown on October 1.
The president’s party has advanced two federal funding bills in Congress, only to have both blocked by the minority this month, due to a lack of an extension in healthcare spending. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, both of New York, wrote a letter to President Trump requesting a meeting with him, explaining their stance on needing funding for healthcare in the next government spending bill.
The president is set to meet with them on Thursday, but expressed skepticism over their strategy.
“They want all this stuff. They don’t change. They haven’t learned from the biggest beating they’ve ever taken,” President Trump said after receiving their request. “I’d love to meet with them, but I don’t think it’s going to have an impact.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson said he was not certain the meeting was necessary, calling the demands for extending the Affordable Care Act subsidies “wildly partisan.“
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For wisdom for President Trump as he prepares to meet with congressional leaders.
- For the majority and minority leaders of the House and Senate to negotiate in good faith.
