The assistant attorney general said, “Companies that collect children’s personal information must comply with the law.”
The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced a $400 million settlement with ByteDance and TikTok last month. The companies were accused of collecting the private data of minors and violating a 2019 settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
The Justice Department stated that, due to significant changes in leadership and privacy protection programs within the companies, the settlement was reached without compromising the children’s information. The 2019 settlement with the FTC was vacated, dropping a privacy order previously placed on the precursor app to TikTok, Musical.ly.
“Companies that collect children’s personal information must comply with the law,” said Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate of the DOJ’s Civil Division. “This resolution secures a significant monetary recovery and reflects the Department’s commitment to ensuring children receive the full protections that Congress mandated.”
