DHS Orders Removal of Chinese AI from Federal Civilian Agencies IT Systems

The Chinese app DeepSeek will be removed from all IT systems due to national security concerns.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has banned the artificial intelligence (AI) application DeepSeek for all civilian agencies. In addition to removing DeepSeek products from information technology systems, agencies will be prohibited from using third-party products or services developed using DeepSeek implementations or buying products or services from DeepSeek’s developer and its affiliates.

The department explained that DeepSeek’s models “present multiple threat vectors” and use of the product “may result in the transfer of sensitive data to [China] if used by U.S. government employees or vendors.” DHS added that the models may also contain malware or other security vulnerabilities.

Representative John Moolenaar of Michigan, chair of the House Select Committee on China, supported the ban, stating, “DeepSeek is a dangerous AI model that has no place in the federal government, and the Trump Administration is right to put this commonsense AI guardrail in place. Last year, the Select Committee investigated how DeepSeek is a tool for [China] to spy, steal, and subvert export controls on the world-leading chips that keep America ahead of [China].”

The Commerce Department and the U.S. Navy barred use of the product last year. Other countries have also banned the AI app over security concerns, including South Korea, Italy, and Germany.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin as he seeks to strengthen U.S. national security.
  • For Congressman Moolenaar as he works to support important national security efforts.
  • For God’s continued protection over the United States.
