House Speaker Mike Johnson adjourned the lower chamber a day earlier than anticipated this week. The House of Representatives is now on a 7-week recess leading up to November’s midterm election. All the seats in the House are up for election every two years, and the representatives seeking reelection are heading back to their districts to campaign. The Senate, which returned Monday, will be in session for three weeks.
Speaker Johnson also addressed concerns this week about the safety of artificial intelligence. He likened the increasing anxiety to that of those promoting climate change, some of whom have predicted that humans would die within certain periods of time.
“When the president says ‘a hoax,’ what he’s referring to is, we’ve all seen this movie before,” Speaker Johnson said, referring to President Trump’s earlier remarks. “A catastrophe is created. The media gets spun up. Social media gets spun up. Everybody says we’re all… going to be dead in 10 years.”
“What the president is saying is you’re not all going to be dead in 10 years,” the House speaker continued. “That’s a hoax.”
