Senator Cassidy announces his support for the president’s nominee.
The U.S. Senate is holding the vote to confirm President Trump’s nominee for Attorney General, Todd Blanche, ahead of the August recess. Deputy Attorney General Blanche filled an acting role since the departure of Pamela Bondi in April.
Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina had withheld their support until Blanche terminated the anti-weaponization fund last week. The fund was part of a settlement the Justice Department had reached to have the Internal Revenue Service compensate individuals who had been targeted by the government.
On Friday morning, Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana announced he would support Blanche’s confirmation. With Senator McConnell away from the Capitol due to his continued convalescence in Kentucky, Senator Cassidy’s vote will comprise the necessary majority after Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska declared they would vote against Blanche’s confirmation.
