The legislation would halt the twice-a-year clock change and keep most of the nation on Daylight Saving Time.
The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Sunshine Protection Act on Tuesday. The legislation would halt the time changes in the spring and fall, keeping most of the United States on Daylight Saving Time, though there is a provision that would allow states to opt out. Hawaii and Arizona already remain on Standard Time year round.
President Donald Trump has advocated for the measure, which was introduced by Representative Vern Buchanan of Florida. The president responded, “It’s time that people can stop worrying about the ‘Clock,’ not to mention all of the work and money that is spent on this ridiculous, twice yearly production.“
The bill now goes to the Senate, where progress on its version of the measure was halted by Senator Tom Cotton’s objection last fall.
The act’s future in the upper chamber is uncertain, as Senate Majority Leader Thune said, “I just don’t think we want a mandate, and that was tried once before and repealed, but we’re looking at it.”
Representatives Mary Gay Scanlon of Pennsylvania and Pat Harrigan of North Carolina recently introduced the Sunshine for Our Kids Act, which would return the U.S. to Standard Time permanently and eliminate Daylight Saving Time.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For members of the Senate as they consider permanent Daylight Saving Time.
- For discernment for members of Congress as they consider “Locking the Clock.”
- For wisdom for the president and his administration as they advocate for the elimination of the time change.
