Senate Passes Bipartisan Housing Affordability Bill

Senator Scott said that young people are delaying getting married and having children due to the cost of housing.

The Senate passed the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act this week with bipartisan support, as some legislators campaign for reelection. The upper and lower chambers of Congress previously passed different, separate bills to improve the nation’s housing affordability.

Senators Tim Scott of South Carolina and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts worked with Representatives French Hill of Arkansas and Maxine Waters of California to craft legislation that would pass both congressional houses.

Senator Scott said that, due to the high prices and low supply of housing, young people today are “delaying marriage, they’re delaying having kids, they’re delaying putting down roots.”

The bill seeks to ease regulations surrounding home construction, including waiving environmental reviews for certain housing construction projects. Among the legislation’s 45 provisions is a prohibition on companies owning more than 350 single-family homes from purchasing any more.

The House of Representatives will now consider the bill, which President Trump is expected to sign after it is approved by Congress.
