Interior Provides Funding for Orphaned Well Cleanup

The assistant secretary said phase 3 of the State Formula Grant Guidance is now in effect.

The Department of the Interior (DOI) has announced new guidance for the State Orphaned Wells Grant Program. Orphaned wells are defined by the Department of the Interior as “oil and gas wells abandoned without a responsible operator,” emphasizing the risks these sites pose if left unchecked.

Acting Assistant Secretary for Policy, Management, and Budget Troy Finnegan said, “The Phase 3 State Formula Grant Guidance improves oversight and accountability to ensure grant recipients meet performance goals, and decrease risk of fraud, waste, and abuse. The Department is committed to good stewardship for the American taxpayer.”

Three different grants are being supervised by the Orphaned Wells Program Office. The grants help administer nearly $4.2 billion in available resources to eligible states and partners so they can repair, close, or open wells as needed.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Acting Assistant Secretary Finnegan as he oversees the grant program to clean up orphaned wells.
  • For DOI officials as they implement rules and regulations for the maintenance or closure of oil wells.
  • For Secretary Burgum to receive the Lord’s direction as he manages the Interior Department and its programs.
