Authorities determined the device, powder, and fuse were “viable and energetic.”
The Transportation Safety Administration found explosive material and five mobile phones in a California man’s carry-on at the Sacramento International Airport on May 30. The man was scheduled to board a flight from Sacramento to North Carolina. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and local county law enforcement secured the area and removed the device. Authorities found that the device, powder, and fuse were “viable and energetic.”
The man’s bag also contained a torch lighter, a knife, scissors, an aerosol can, and zip ties. He denied knowing the materials were in his backpack before he was arrested. He has been charged with unlawfully possessing explosive material in an airport.
U.S. Attorney for Eastern California Eric Grant stated, “The explosive device had the potential to cause injury and, if the explosive device had detonated next to a window on a pressurized aircraft flying above 10,000 feet, it had the potential to damage the aircraft and cause a possible loss of cabin pressure.”
