Proposed adjustments would reduce some military assets assigned to NATO crisis planning as allies expand defense roles.
The United States is reportedly planning to scale back military assets that support the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The reductions will encourage NATO allies to increase their contributions to European defense. The reduced resources are expected to include strategic bombers, fighter jets, refueling tankers, and naval forces.
Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell stated, “These changes represent an opportunity for allies to demonstrate that they have heard President Trump’s call for them to step up and take primary responsibility for Europe’s conventional defense.”
Secretary General Mark Rutte said the decrease in the U.S. contribution to NATO was “to be expected.“ The NATO secretary general cited defense spending increases by NATO countries, saying, “This is why Europe is spending so much more to basically end the overreliance on one ally when it comes to defense of the totality of NATO.”
Officials also emphasized that the changes involve forces assigned to NATO plans rather than immediate cuts to U.S. troop levels in Europe.
