U.S. and Allies Object to United Nations Election of Iran to Nuclear Nonproliferation Group

The U.S., U.A.E., U.K., Germany, and France cited the lack of compliance by Iran with the Non-proliferation Treaty.

The United Nations elected the Islamic Republic of Iran to be a Vice President of its Nuclear Non-Proliferation Review Conference this week. The conference is scheduled to review the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). The position Iran holds will be procedural and does not grant veto power or significant decision-making authority.

The United States, United Arab Emirates, Germany, the United Kingdom, and France objected to the consensus vote due to Iran’s failure to abide by the NPT.

U.S. Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz said, “We are deeply shocked that this body has chosen to allow Iran to assume any position of leadership at this review conference.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Ambassador Waltz as he represents the United States at the United Nations.
  • For Secretary of State Rubio and U.S. diplomatic officials as they engage in discussions with foreign ministers and heads of state.
