President Donald Trump announced this past week that the United States would ban Canadian alcohol, some dairy products, and large motorcycles starting September 29, providing a three-week span for trade negotiations. The bans are being made under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, which allows the president to prohibit imports from nations engaged in discrimination against U.S. commerce. The White House announced that existing tariffs on some steel and aluminum goods, furniture, and paper would increase as of September 15.
Japanese beer maker Sapporo Breweries Ltd. announced that it will be moving production of its nonalcoholic beer from Canada to the United States in the coming year due to President Trump’s tariffs.
After trade talks with Canada fell apart in late August, President Trump issued an executive order to rename the Great Lake Ontario “Lake America.” The president stated, “The United States is the greatest protector of the Great Lakes, including the body of water currently known as Lake Ontario. Without the security and investment provided by the United States, this freshwater system would not be open for shipping, recreation, and responsible use to the same extent as it is today.”
Apple Maps and Google updated the name from “Lake Ontario” to “Lake America” for U.S. users a week ago.
