NHTSA Considers Permanent Ban on Chinese Air Bag Inflators after Fatalities

The agency released a report on the imported devices and their effects, which resulted in 10 fatalities and 2 injuries.

The Department of Transportation’s (DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released findings after an investigation into faulty air bag inflators. The case was originally opened in October 2025 when, instead of inflating the airbags, the devices ruptured on impact, splitting into metal fragments and hitting victims, which killed 10 people and injured two.

All vehicles involved in the incidents had air bag inflators that were manufactured by Jilin Province Detiannuo Safety Technology Co., Ltd. (DTN). NHTSA believes the Chinese company’s air bag inflators were illegally imported to the United States and installed into the vehicles by auto repair shops.

NHTSA has released details on the dozen crashes involved in the investigation and a summary of their work. The agency has urged car owners to check their car’s history, especially if their car was in a previous accident with an air bag deployment after 2020, in case their air bag deployment devices were replaced with a DTN model.

“Our initial investigation into the use of illegal Chinese airbags in auto shops has revealed a disturbing trend: these substandard parts are killing American families,” said Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. “The Trump Administration will continue to fight to keep you and your family safe on our roads.”

Federal law requires NHTSA to allow the company to present information that could counter its findings.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For NHTSA officials involved in the case with DTN, that their efforts would produce safer cars for Americans.
  • For U.S. officials as they seek to prevent illegal imports of safety equipment in the transportation sector.
