Supreme Court Issues Stay in NY Redistricting Case

The majority ruled against the racial gerrymandering of New York’s 11th district.

The Supreme Court granted the request from Representative Nicole Malliotakis of New York to stay a lower court’s order for the state’s 11th District to be redrawn. The district, which Congresswoman Malliotakis represents, covers Staten Island and part of Brooklyn.

The congresswoman’s application stated, “The trial court’s order has thrown New York’s elections into chaos on the eve of the 2026 Congressional Election.”

Justice Samuel Alito wrote that the state court order “blatantly discriminates on the basis of race.“ He highlighted that the state supreme court ordered the New York Independent Redistricting Commission to draw a “new congressional district for the express purpose of ensuring that ‘minority voters‘ are able to elect the candidate of their choice.“

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the justices of the Supreme Court as they hear challenges to states’ laws regarding the redrawing of congressional districts.
  • For members of Congress as they seek reelection and for candidates who are running against incumbents to represent their positions with honesty and integrity.
  • For voters to be discerning as the midterm primary elections begin.
