Tim Kaine

U.S. Senator from Virginia

Timothy Michael Kaine was born in February 1958 in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Missouri and received a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. In the midst of his law studies, he took a break to help Jesuit missionaries in a Catholic school in Honduras.

Kaine clerked for a judge on the Eleventh Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. He joined a private firm and later became another firm’s director. He taught legal ethics at the University of Richmond School of Law.

Kaine was elected mayor of Richmond. He was then elected Lt. Governor of Virginia and later became Governor. He chaired the Democratic National Committee before winning a sit in the U.S. Senate in 2012. He was the vice presidential candidate in former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s unsuccessful presidential campaign in 2016.

He is married to state judge Anne Holton, and they have three children. He is Catholic.

In the News…

Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia joined Senator Adam Schiff of California in introducing a measure to halt the anti-drug trafficking operations of President Trump’s administration in the Caribbean. The Senate voted the measure down last week.

The resolution attempted to block the administration from “engaging in hostilities against non-state organizations until formally authorized by Congress.” The War Powers Act of 1973 prevents the Executive Branch from conducting ongoing military operations without the approval of Congress.

President Trump’s administration notified Congress two weeks ago of its engagement in a “non-international armed conflict“ with drug cartels.

Senator Kaine also unsuccessfully introduced a measure in June of this year under the War Powers Act to restrict the president’s power ahead of Operation Midnight Hammer, the attack on the nuclear facilities in Iran.
