Justice Department Sues Six States Over Voter Registration Roll Compliance

Federal lawsuits cite failure to provide records required under election laws

The U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division has filed lawsuits against California, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania for not producing statewide voter registration lists as required by federal law.

“Clean voter rolls are the foundation of free and fair elections,” said Attorney General Pamela Bondi. “Every state has a responsibility to ensure that voter registration records are accurate, accessible, and secure — states that don’t fulfill that obligation will see this Department of Justice in court.”

The lawsuits also cite the Civil Rights Act of 1960, which allows the Justice Department to demand access to such records.

“States are required to safeguard American elections by complying with our federal elections laws,” said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon of DOJ’s Civil Rights Division. “Clean voter rolls protect American citizens from voting fraud and abuse, and restore their confidence that their states’ elections are conducted properly, with integrity, and in compliance with the law.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Attorney General Bondi to receive God’s wisdom as she heads the Justice Department.
  • For discernment for Assistant Attorney General Dhillon as she oversees the Civil Rights Division’s work to ensure states comply with federal election laws.
