Transportation Secretary Requests Assault Data from NYC’s MTA

New York’s public transit authority touts the overall reduction in crime.

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has requested additional information, on behalf of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, from the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA). The federal agency has criticized the crime statistics submitted to the Department of Transportation (DOT) by New York City’s public transit system. While the MTA submitted over 20 pages of crime data to the department in March, Secretary Duffy stated that the information did not include the increase in assaults on public transit, which has gone up by 66 percent since 2019.

“MTA giving USDOT the runaround when New York City grapples with a dramatic uptick in subway assaults is unacceptable,” said Secretary Duffy. “It’s time we restore order on New York’s transit systems — lives are stake.”

He added, “The innocent victims of these horrific crimes and the daily commuters who live in fear of violence deserve better. The MTA should provide us with the information we need to assess the gaps in their security strategy and safety protocols. It’s time we restore order on New York’s transit systems — lives are stake.”

The MTA and the NYPD responded, stating that, though assaults have gone up, overall transit crime has come down from 1,083 incidents to 1,051 between 2024 and 2025, according to NYPD data.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Duffy to seek God’s direction as he manages the Department of Transportation.
  • For Acting Administrator Tariq Bokhari as he heads the Federal Transit Administration.
  • For U.S. officials as they work to increase the safety of public transportation.
