Los Angeles Protests Turn Violent

City communities in turmoil in response to the presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

PRAY FIRST for God to direct federal officials as they work to deescalate the situation, for safety for all peacekeepers and first responders, and for calm peaceful assembly to prevail over violence.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. John 14:27

This past weekend, the city of Los Angeles was engulfed in protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations escalated into violent riots. The unrest began on Friday, June 6, when Homeland Security agents conducted multiple raids across the city, leading to the arrest of over 40 individuals. The situation quickly spiraled out of control, prompting President Donald Trump to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops and 700 U.S. Marines to restore order.

Around the nation, similar but smaller protests have erupted, including protests in elsewhere in California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Washington, and Washington D.C.

The Unfolding Events
The initial protests were sparked by ICE raids at various locations, including a Home Depot and a clothing store in downtown Los Angeles. As news of the arrests spread, more people gathered to demonstrate against what they perceived as unjust immigration enforcement. Many claim that, while ICE has the ability to detain people, ICE was carrying out deportations without due process. By Friday evening, the protests had grown significantly, with over 100 people assembling at the immigration services building and detention center. The Los Angeles Police Department declared the gathering an unlawful assembly and attempted to disperse the crowd, leading to clashes between protesters and law enforcement.

On Saturday, June 7, the protests continued to intensify. Demonstrators blocked traffic on the 101 Freeway and engaged in confrontations with police officers in riot gear. The situation reached a boiling point when President Trump authorized the deployment of the National Guard, citing the Insurrection Act of 1807. The presence of federal troops did little to quell the unrest, as protesters continued to clash with law enforcement throughout the weekend.

Governor Newsom condemned the violence and riots while also speaking out out against the deployment, stating, “There was no communication through our office, period, full stop. So, by definition, it’s an illegal act, an immoral act, an unconstitutional act.”

California Attorney General Rob Bonta added, “The governor’s agreement and consent needs to be part of any calling in of the National Guard. That didn’t happen.”

The Formation of ICE
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was established in 2003 under George W. Bush as part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This formation was a response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which highlighted the need for a more robust and coordinated approach to national security. ICE was created by merging parts of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) and the U.S. Customs Service, giving it a unique combination of civil and criminal authorities to enforce immigration laws and protect national security.

The history of immigration in the United States is marked by waves of immigrants from various parts of the world, each contributing to the nation’s cultural and economic fabric. However, in recent years, ICE has been at the center of significant controversy and public debate. Some call the agency’s enforcement tactics aggressive, including raids and detentions.

The recent unrest in Los Angeles is a continuation of the broader national debate over immigration enforcement. The protests were triggered after ICE raids and the subsequent arrests of individuals, which some viewed as unjust and heavy-handed. The deployment of the National Guard and the strong federal response have further fueled tensions, highlighting the deep divisions within the community and the country as a whole.

Political Responses
The deployment of the National Guard has drawn mixed reactions from political leaders. President Trump defended his decision, stating that the National Guard was necessary to restore law and order in the face of violent mobs attacking federal agents. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, “In recent days, violent mobs have attacked ICE Officers and Federal Law Enforcement Agents carrying out basic deportation operations in Los Angeles, California.”

In contrast, California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass criticized the federal response, arguing that the deployment of troops only exacerbated the situation. Governor Newsom called for a peaceful resolution to the protests and urged the federal government to reconsider its approach. Mayor Bass expressed concern for the safety of both protesters and law enforcement officers, calling for dialogue and understanding to address the underlying issues driving the unrest.

Why It Matters and How We Can Respond:
The events in Los Angeles can serve as a catalyst for a broader national conversation about topics dividing our nation such as immigration reform and law enforcement practices. Violence cannot be the answer and we are encouraged to strive for peaceful interactions, “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all” (Romans 12:18). As the city of Los Angeles grapples with this turmoil, we are reminded of the importance of prayer. Continue to lift up the nation’s leaders at the federal, state, and local levels as they seek ways to address the unrest peacefully around the country.

HOW THEN SHOULD WE PRAY:

— Pray for God give all who hold public office a passion for peace and an ear to God so that they may accomplish His perfect will. I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
— Pray for God to soften the hearts of the nation, that we would seek God’s strength and refuge and seek peace instead of violence. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1

CONSIDER THESE ITEMS FOR PRAYER:

  • Pay for Protection for the National Guard troops and law enforcement officers as they work to maintain safety and security in the city.
  • Pray for healing and reconciliation for the community of Los Angeles, that they may find common ground and work towards a peaceful resolution.
  • Pray for guidance for President Trump, Governor Newsom, Mayor Bass, and other officials as they need to work together to lead their constituents through this difficult time and focus on restoring order and peace.
