He stated that the restrictions being implemented are for national security and to stop leaks.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a memo last week that increases the credentialing rules for journalists at the Pentagon. Amid leaks coming from within the Department of Defense, Secretary Hegseth explained that the new controls are to safeguard national security.
The defense secretary stated, “While the Department remains committed to transparency, the Department is equally obligated to protect [classified national intelligence information] and sensitive information – the unauthorized disclosure of which could put the lives of U.S. Service members in danger. To attain professional balance between press access and [operational security], the… updated security measures for resident and visiting press are needed to reduce the opportunities for in-person inadvertent and unauthorized disclosures.”
The memo outlines changes, including the requirement of a formal escort for most areas of the Pentagon. New badges with clearer “Press” identification will also be issued.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Secretary Hegseth to seek God’s guidance as he heads the Defense Department.
- For Pentagon officials and journalists to be diligent in protecting the nation’s military personnel and national security.
