Officials inform a Senate committee about a cloud service breach of workstations and unclassified materials.
Officials from the U.S. Department of the Treasury told the Senate Banking Committee that a Chinese-backed breach happened to a third-party security system in early December. After the cyberattack, which enabled the threat actor to “override the service’s security, remotely access certain Treasury DO user workstations, and access certain unclassified documents maintained by those users,“ the department took the compromised system offline.
“There is no evidence indicating the threat actor has continued access to Treasury systems or information,” a Treasury spokesperson stated. “Treasury takes very seriously all threats against our systems, and the data it holds.”
“Over the last four years, Treasury has significantly bolstered its cyber defense, and we will continue to work with both private and public sector partners to protect our financial system from threat actors.”
The spokesperson said the Treasury Department is working with the FBI, the Intelligence Community, third-party forensic investigators, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency regarding the breach.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Treasury Secretary Yellen and department officials as they seek to determine the extent of the breach.
- For the FBI, CISA, IC, and other investigators as they probe the attack and its impact.
