The National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Jet Propulsion Laboratory laid off 325 employees this month. The lab is managed by the California Institute of Technology and specializes in robotic spacecraft.
The lab announced, “While we have taken various measures to meet our current FY’25 budget allocation, we have reached the difficult decision to reduce the JPL workforce through layoffs.“ The announcement said the terminations would include employees in the “technical, business, and support areas of the Laboratory.”
Laboratory Director Laurie Leshin issued a memo to the entire staff earlier this month. “With lower budgets and based on the forecasted work ahead, we had to tighten our belts across the board,” Director Leshin wrote.
The reduction, which accounts for 5 percent of the laboratory’s workforce, had been in preparation prior to the U.S. presidential election. Director Leshin said that the layoffs “would be happening regardless of the recent election outcome.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Director Leshin as she assesses the budgetary restraints of the Jet Propulsion Lab.
- For NASA Administrator Bill Nelson to seek God’s direction as he oversees the space agency.
