The Glorious Return of Jesus

Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.       Luke 21:27

Certain sporting events have a two-minute warning, which may consist of a buzzer or bell that signals the pause. In the National Football League, all games have an automatic timeout when the second and fourth quarters reach that point in the half. The game is often won or lost in the last two minutes of the final quarter. Players know it is their last chance to buckle down, to assert themselves in offense or defense. Regardless of how exhausted they may be, for those remaining two minutes, they need to give their best.

As you watch events unfold across the United States and around the world, at times it may feel as if God has given a two-minute warning – although clearly, no two-minute warning will be given (Matthew 24:36). However, He has told of signs to watch for: “signs in the sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world” (Luke 21:25-26). But there is good news. The King is coming! As a player on His team, now is the time to assert yourself, live righteously in the knowledge of His power, strength, and victory, paying attention and walking closely with the Lord.

Author and pastor, Dr. Vance Havner said, “We are not just looking for something to happen, we are looking for Someone to come! And when these things begin to come to pass, we are not to drop our heads in discouragement or shake our heads in despair, but rather lift up our heads in delight.” The old hymn says, “It may be at morn, when the day is awaking, When sunlight through darkness and shadow is breaking, That Jesus will come in the fullness of glory, To receive from the world ‘His own.’” As pastor, teacher and evangelist Bob Gass said, “Rejoice, child of God. Jesus is coming again; you can absolutely count on it!”

7 And they asked him, “Teacher, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?”

25 “And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26 people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

34 “But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. 35 For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”
